Overland Park, Kansas-based investor group Innovation in Motion (iiM) announced backing for Kansas City startup Mobility Designed.
“From both an industry and entrepreneurial perspective, we understood the problem that Mobility Designed is solving and saw a real opportunity,” said Lydia Kinkade, iiM managing director. “iiM is very excited to be involved with the Mobility Designed team. They show so much passion, have a strong work ethic and clear vision for their business.”
iiM focuses on companies working in the agriculture, animal health and human health services sectors, investing $50,000 to $300,000 in seed stage companies where the founder has personally invested in the company, raised money from friends and family and has a plan for how to scale the company.
Liliana and Max Younger, Mobility Designed founders, connected with iiM at the Accelerate the Heartland conference in Wichita, Kansas, last fall. After additional meetings with Kinkade, the Youngers pitched to the iiM investors in November.
“We are thrilled to be working with iiM. It’s great to have the support of a Kansas City investment group,” said Liliana Younger, Mobility Designed founder. “We hope others feel inspired and confident by the iiM investment.”
Mobility Designed received funding from Digital Sandbox KC in 2015. Since then, they have successfully launched their first product, the M+D™ Crutch, secured more than $800,000 in follow-on funding and employ five full time.
“Mobility Designed is a perfect example of how Digital Sandbox KC, through partnerships across the metro, is helping startups get their ideas to market,” said Jeff Shackelford, Digital Sandbox KC executive director. “Mobility Designed came to us through our partnership with the UMKC eScholars program. We worked with them to validate their concept and bring their vision to life.”
Mobility Designed creates mobility devices to improve quality of life for those with mobility challenges. Their first product, the M+D™ Crutch, solves the problem of pain and potential damage to armpits, hands and wrists caused by the use of standard crutches. M+D™ Crutches are designed to provide users a more comfortable experience with an ergonomic design.
